One of the monument's most serious problems is moisture penetration

A large-scale restoration of the Monument of Freedom on Shipka Peak is underway. Starting today, the monument will be closed to visitors and will remain inaccessible until the conservation and repair work is completed, according to BTA correspondent Ralitsa Stefanova in Kazanlak.

Up to 642 calendar days have been allocated for the construction work. However, due to the harsh weather conditions in the Shipka Pass area, work will only take place between April 1 and October 31 over the course of three consecutive years. This is the period when access to the monument and outdoor work are safest.
