Bulgaria Plans Unique Postal Codes for Every Addressable Property

Every apartment, house, office or other separately addressable property in Bulgaria could receive its own unique postal code under a proposed overhaul of the country’s postal code system, developed by the Communications Regulation Commission (CRC).

The proposal would retain the existing four-digit code, which identifies a settlement or postal district, while adding a second part to identify the specific addressable property.

Instead of using the same postal code for multiple addresses within a given area, the full code combination would make it possible to distinguish individual properties or separately addressable premises.

The aim of the change is to create a significantly more precise system for identifying addresses and to facilitate the processing, sorting and delivery of postal items.

The new codes are expected to be included in a national postal code register. The CRC is also working on the regulatory framework that would establish the rules and procedures for creating, maintaining and using the register.

The system would be relevant not only to traditional postal services. Unique address identification could also facilitate courier deliveries and other services where accurately determining the delivery location is essential.

Citizens would be able to search the register, with certain types of searches expected to be available free of charge under the proposal. The change has not yet taken effect. It is still part of a regulatory procedure, meaning that, for now, citizens will continue to use the existing four-digit postal codes.
