The Bulgarian author has gained international acclaim, culminating in his 2023 International Booker Prize win

Bulgarian writer Georgi Gospodinov is among the favorites for this year’s Nobel Prize in Literature, the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reports. The winner of the award will be officially announced in Stockholm on Thursday.

Who is Georgi Gospodinov?

Georgi Gospodinov is one of Bulgaria’s most successful contemporary writers, and in recent years his name has appeared increasingly often on international literary lists. Born in 1968 in Yambol, he has gradually established himself as a prominent writer both in Bulgaria and abroad.

The writer began his literary career as a poet, but later went on to write novels, short stories, essays and plays. His best-known books include Natural Novel, The Physics of Sorrow and Time Shelter. His work often explores themes such as memory, personal history, the perception of time, and the way the past shapes the present.

Gospodinov’s major international breakthrough came in 2023, when Time Shelter won the International Booker Prize. The book was translated into English by Angela Rodel, and the award made Gospodinov the first Bulgarian writer to win the prestigious prize.

His work is now available to readers in numerous countries and has been translated into many languages. His short story Blind Vaysha was also adapted into an animated film by director Theodore Ushev and went on to receive an Oscar nomination.

It is this international recognition, the popularity of his books outside Bulgaria, and the accolades he has received in recent years that have made Georgi Gospodinov one of the names frequently mentioned among the potential candidates for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
