Iran has sharply criticized Bulgaria for allowing U.S. aircraft to conduct in-flight refueling over its territory. The statement was posted on the Facebook page of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Sofia.

According to a spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, responsibility for this decision lies with the Bulgarian institutions that authorized the use of military bases by U.S. forces.

Officials in Tehran also claim that this is not a precedent and point out that Bulgaria has previously allowed Sofia Airport to be used for the deployment and operations of U.S. aircraft, which, according to the Iranian side, have supported U.S. military actions against Iran.

The article emphasizes that relations between the Iranian and Bulgarian people have traditionally been friendly and based on mutual respect. “The Bulgarian people are well aware that the Iranian people have never had any issues with Bulgaria. For decades, our relations with Bulgaria have been based on mutual respect,” the Iranian Embassy’s statement further notes.
