Heat alert issued for large parts of Bulgaria as temperatures climb to 38°C

A yellow warning for dangerously high temperatures has been issued for large parts of Bulgaria on Tuesday, August 4. The affected regions are Blagoevgrad, Kyustendil, Pazardzhik, Plovdiv, Gabrovo, Veliko Tarnovo, Pleven, Ruse, Silistra, Dobrich, Varna, Stara Zagora, Sliven, Yambol, Haskovo and Kardzhali, according to the forecast by Bulgaria's National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH).

Atmospheric pressure is above the average for August. It is expected to decrease slightly during the day, approaching the monthly average.

Dangerous heat warnings in the coming days

Skies will remain clear overnight. Winds will weaken and become calm in many areas.

On Tuesday, the weather will be sunny, with hot conditions in the lowlands during the afternoon. Temporary increases in cloud cover are expected, mainly over eastern Bulgaria and the mountainous regions, but little to no rainfall is forecast. Winds will be light to moderate from the northeast. Maximum temperatures will range between 33°C and 38°C.

In the mountains, conditions will be mostly sunny, with some temporary cloud development in the afternoon but almost no precipitation. A light to moderate northeasterly wind will blow. Maximum temperatures are expected to reach around 28°C at 1,200 metres and about 20°C at 2,000 metres.

Along the Black Sea coast, the weather will be mostly sunny. A light northeasterly wind is expected, becoming moderate along the southern coastline. Maximum temperatures will range between 29°C and 32°C, while sea water temperatures are around 25°C.
