US Ambassador to Bulgaria: We Will Not Forget Everyone Who Helped Us After the Horror of 9/11

The United States will never forget the courage of those who helped in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks and during the war on terror that followed, Acting US Ambassador to Bulgaria Martin McDowell said in an interview with NOVA, marking the 25th anniversary of the attacks.

“We will never forget where we were on that terrible day. Twenty-five years ago this week, the world united in grief and horror over the unprovoked attacks of September 11,” McDowell said.

The terrorist attacks claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 people, citizens of more than 100 countries.

The US diplomat stressed that the United States would always remember those who came to the country's aid after the tragedy and took part in the subsequent war on terror.

“We also honor the courage of the brave passengers of United Airlines Flight 93, whose sacrifice prevented an even greater tragedy,” he said.

According to McDowell, the anniversary of the attacks should not be associated solely with loss and pain.

“As we reflect on the message of September 11, let us not think only about what we lost. September 11 also united the free world against hatred and in refusing to yield to tyranny and terror,” McDowell said.

He stressed the need for a shared commitment to defending freedom and recalled what he described as a message forever linked to the tragic date.

“We were called to defend freedom together. Forever embedded in the sacred ground beneath the September 11 Memorial is the conviction that love is stronger than hate,” the Acting US Ambassador to Sofia said.
