“Vazrazhdane” voted “against” the decision

The Bulgarian National Assembly has approved the government’s proposal to acquire five IRIS-T SLM surface-to-air missile systems from Germany. The purchase is another step towards modernising Bulgaria’s air defence capabilities.

The missile systems, worth more than €1 billion, will be financed through the European SAFE instrument. The deal also includes guided missiles, additional equipment, warranty servicing and initial logistical support.

The parliamentary Defence Committee had previously backed the acquisition of the five additional systems, valued at more than €900 million.

During the parliamentary debate, MPs also called on the government to work towards acquiring anti-drone systems. Representatives of Democratic Bulgaria reiterated their demand for stronger security measures in the Black Sea region. “Vazrazhdane” voted “against” the decision.
