According to information from the State Directorate for Fire Safety and Civil Protection, it comes from a large forest fire

A major fire in Serbia has caused heavy smoke in parts of the Sofia and Pernik regions. The smell of burning vegetation is also noticeable in the area. The BG-Alert warning system was also activated.

Lyudmil Veselinov, deputy regional governor of Pernik, told NOVA that the fire is located near Belgrade. Strong winds are the reason the smoke has traveled so far.

The Sofia Municipality recommends that residents in the affected areas close the windows of their homes and offices until the smoke has cleared. Pregnant women, children, the elderly and people with chronic respiratory or heart conditions should limit their time outdoors and physical activity.

Three fires are currently raging in Serbia - one north of Belgrade, one in the central part of the country and one near the border with Kosovo. The largest fire at the moment is the one in the “Banatski Piasatsi” Nature Reserve.

The weather forecast calls for northwesterly winds on Tuesday and Wednesday, which could carry smoke from Serbia. A change in wind direction is not expected until Thursday.
